For something quick and easy you can’t go past Ciabatta Cafe and Bakery. From the freshly baked breads to the kiwi favourites like a mince and cheese pie, this spot has quickly become a local favourite. You can also find the longest hotdog in the world at Ciabatta - it’s called the Long Dog! With 430mm in length it makes quite the lunch, especially if you have it loaded with sour cream and cheese and fire it up for the ‘melt down’ experience.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Discover the incredible wonder that is glowworms at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. We recommend taking the famous boat ride where you meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence up at the Glowworm Grotto.

Alternately for adrenaline junkies, you can abseil, weave, jump, climb, and float through a glowworm-studded subterranean wonderland with the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co.

Hobbtion, Matamata

If you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, then visiting the Hobbiton movie set is a must. Stop by ‘Bag End’, where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began and crouch under the small doorways to explore the hobbit holes. You can also visit the Dragon Inn, the mill and the Party Tree, plus listen to the tale of how Hobbiton was created.

Tours depart daily from the Shire’s Rest Cafe, 501 Buckland Road Matamata and from the Matamata & Rotorua i-SITEs.
